What makes this the best pickle dip recipe?

My daughter, Deidra, introduced me to the pickle dip. At first taste, I thought it was amazing. But I knew the dish had caramelized onions, and I wanted less tangy dill pickle flavor and a bit more onion taste.

I'm a fan of the classic French onion dip. Are You?

So I reduced the amount of chopped pickle and found a perfect balance of tangy dill and sweet onion. Most people like it this way, but when Deidra's around, we add more pickles!

The tasty ingredients

Ingredients of chopped pickles, seasoning, garlic, cream cheese, and cooked onions on a wooden board for Best Pickle Dip Recipe.

Individually, these items may typically be found in some kind of dip, but together they make a delicious blend. Think creamy, cool, and tantalizing to the taste buds!

  • olive oil - for caramelizing the onions, canola oil can be substituted
  • onion - 1 large yellow onion or any sweet-tasting one will do
  • garlic - fresh and pressed for evenly distributed flavor
  • cream cheese - softened regular or Neufchatel cream cheese
  • mayonnaise - a good-tasting brand
  • sour cream - blends perfectly with cream cheese and mayonnaise for dips like in this Fresh Herb Dip
  • dill pickles - chopped small, whole, spears, or chips will do
  • Cajun seasoning blend - your favorite brand or Pink Cajun Seasoning Blend will do just fine

How to make pickle dip

The hardest part, but not really difficult at all, is slicing and caramelizing the onions. Take your time with this process. Be sure to cook the onions until they are brown, often stirring so they don't burn. Taste of Home offers a great way to produce The Best Caramelized Onions.

After the onions have caramelized, set them aside to cool and cream the cream cheese, mayonnaise, and sour cream together until smooooooooth. Then stir in the onions, pickles, and seasonings. Place the dip in a sealed container and chill in the refrigerator.

Serve the Best Pickle Dip Recipe cold with chips, crackers, and/or fresh veggies.

Notes and tips

  • A white or yellow onion will do.
  • Substitute canola oil for olive oil.
  • Stir the onions in the hot oil often so they don't burn.
  • Using softened cream cheese helps get a smoother texture.
  • Use salt and pepper to taste instead of the Cajun seasoning blend.
  • Make a change by using your favorite kind of pickle instead of dill.
