Better, Made From Scratch

This sandwich filling is one of my husband's favorite midweek suppers, along with a side of fries. I try to keep the ingredients on hand for when that Homemade Sloppy Joes' hankering hits.

You may have used the packaged Sloppy Joe dry seasoning mix or the canned version in the past, but there's no need to depend on them anymore. This recipe has only a few steps, and it's well worth the small extra effort to get that homemade flavor.

Ingredients for Homemade Sloppy Joes made from scratch.

All it takes is a little measuring, chopping, and mixing together with the browned ground meat. Then 20 minutes of simmering, and voila! It's time to eat!

Choose Your Favorite Bun

After the sauce has thickened, these Sloppy Joes are ready to spread on a bun. By the way, have you noticed how many different buns are on the grocery store shelves these days? So many choices!

We usually eat whole wheat buns, but these cute little white bread sliders are great! Plus, you can have more than one tiny no-guilt sandwich.

You might like your bread buttered and toasted. Sometimes I like that added crunch, and other times the soft bread warmed from the sauce is just right!

And don't forget your favorite add-ons like pickles, onions, and cheese. These are my faves, but the sky's the limit.

This is a perfect meal for those busy times when you want to reach into your pantry for something quick and satisfying. Think Friday night, end of a full week, and YOU need a break! These Homemade Sloppy Joes will help, and your whole family will thank you for it.

This easy recipe for the classic saucy beef sandwich is a tastier version than the traditional semi-homemade way.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 sandwiches 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale

1 ½ pounds ground beef

¾ cup chopped green bell pepper

1 cup chopped onion

4 cloves garlic, pressed

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 cup ketchup

1.5 cups water

2 tablespoons taco seasoning

½ teaspoon salt

¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed

2 tablespoons mustard

8 hamburger buns

Instructions

Brown ground beef along with the onions, peppers, and garlic in a large heavy pot, drain grease if necessary.

Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes on medium-low heat uncovered.

Spoon onto the bottom half of a hamburger bun, place cheese, onion slices, pickles, and other add-ons on top then cover with the other half of the bun. Serve.

Notes

It's still delicious when you substitute the ground beef with ground turkey for fewer calories.

Try it  on a buttery toasted bun.
