Little thumbprint Fig Tart Cookies with less work, but all the taste of an old-fashioned sweet dough tart.
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cups sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup fig or any flavor preserves
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Place flour, salt, and nutmeg in a medium bowl mixing together then set aside.
Cream together in a large bowl the butter and sugar.
Mix eggs and vanilla into creamed butter.
Add the flour mixture a little at a time and mix on low just until blended.
Roll the dough by hand into small balls and place on parchment lined cookie sheets.
Press thumb into each cookie to hold fig preserves.
Bake for 10 minutes.
Fill each cookie with fig or strawberry fig preserves.
Remove cookies from pans and let cool on racks.
